TILMA
The Trade Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement between the Alberta and BC Provincial Governments was signed April 28, 2006 and the majority of this agreement will start to be implemented by the end of this year.
No public consultation ever occurred surrounding this agreement it was concluded silently in private by the respective Provincial Cabinets. Once implemented it has the ability to allow corporations to alter and even eliminate public standards and will prevent government from setting and enforcing public policy.
For instance in BC the Electrical Trade has just been made an uncertified trade, which means if a BC employer deems an individual qualified he/she will be permitted to work as a Journeyman Electrician regardless of this individuals past work, or educational background. Under the TILMA agreement the Alberta Government will have no choice but to allow this individual to work as a Journeyman Electrician in Alberta, or face possible law suits from any prospective employer who might want to hire this individual.
Please take the time to view the footage contained on the following website. This footage is from a form hosted by the Council of Canadians in Vancouver BC on March 5, 2007 and Broadcast by Working TV (A public broadcaster in BC).
The Keynote Speaker is Mr. Stephen Shrybman, a prominent Ontario Lawyer who’s practice specializes in National and International Trade Agreements.
I always knew this was a Bad Agreement, but Mr. Shrybman has shown me just how dangerous this Agreement really is, please watch it. I will warn you that Mr. Shrybman takes a painfully long time getting to the point. The first 8 minutes of his presentation are similar to watching paint dry, but once he get around to explaining the implications of this agreement you to will become vary worried.
